Behind the Film
-
Jennifer Jewell - Writer & Host
Jennifer is a writer, gardener, and advocate for the power of cultivation to transform people and places. As the creator and host of the award-winning public radio program and podcast Cultivating Place, and the author of several acclaimed books, she has spent her career elevating gardeners as cultural voices who shape the fabric of our world.
Through Cultivating Place: The Power of Gardeners, Jennifer’s vision is given new inspiration. Being on the ground with gardeners across the country has deepened and expanded her work, allowing her to witness firsthand the resilience, creativity, and possibility she has long championed through her work. That renewal fuels her belief in the film’s power to inspire audiences in turn.
-
Myriam Nicodemus - Director, Cinematographer & Editor
A filmmaker dedicated to intimate, human-centered storytelling, Myriam bridges documentary storytelling with lived experience, creating space for underrepresented voices to shine.
Through Cultivating Place: The Power of Gardeners, she documents the depth of gardening as a cultural, ecological, and human practice — one that connects people to land and to one another.
Though not a gardener before beginning this project, Myriam’s journey behind the camera has also become one of cultivation — shaping both film and soil, story and self.
-
Khoa Huynh - Associate Producer & Sound
With a professional background in science and research, Khoa brings logistical precision and curiosity to the filmmaking process.
His contributions in sound recording and still photography add both technical depth and an outside perspective to the storytelling.
Like Myriam, he entered this project as a non-gardener, but the experience has rooted him more deeply in practice — reminding him that gardening is not decoration, but a profound act of care, responsibility, and relationship.
